  • Overview

    The Avionics Systems Engineer supports the United States Air Force (USAF) role in evaluating civil airspace compliance with domestic and international navigation requirements. By establishing compliance, USAF and other applicable sponsoring service organizations are able to conduct worldwide operations in civil CNS/ATM airspace.


    • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field (Required)
    • Minimum 2 years of engineering experience avionics, aircraft or aircraft systems.
    • Familiarity with the concepts and/or integration of Communications, Navigation, Surveillance (CNS) capabilities into airborne systems needed to operate in the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) environment.
    • Familiarity with FAA, ICAO and SAE Standards is highly desired.
    • Ability to analyze requirements and assess test reports for compliance against requirements
    • Participation in military avionics requirement development, familiarity with the DoD acquisition process and previous employment in the aviation industry is desired.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a team and to lead and direct the work of others.

    Security Clearance/Level Required:

    • Secret


    • Generate surveillance (Mode S, Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B)) performance matrices based on current civil airspace access requirements
    • Assists aircraft program office staff to develop test plans and procedures.
    • Evaluate compliance to civil surveillance certification requirement by producing performance assessment reports of United States Air Force (USAF) aircraft platforms
    • Perform detailed reviews of contractor deliverables and advise on acceptability for approval.
    • Conduct compliance assessments under the USAF’s airworthiness process
    • Assist USAF Major Commands (MAJCOMs) in determining the operational impacts of surveillance noncompliance
    • Develop and Maintain awareness of current airspace access requirements globally.
    • Participate in civil aviation forums, influencing implementation timelines and defining alternate methods to meet technical performance
    • Actively participate in the development of international standards generation (e.g. RTCA, ICAO, ARINC, Eurocae).
    • Meet with avionics vendors to understand their current product line and express military needs in terms of future requirements
    • Act as technical liaison for Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) catalogue Delivery Orders
    • Assist in creating notional avionics architectures to satisfy MAJCOM requirements. Ability to envision and propose multiple courses of action (COAs).
    • Understand and employ the assistance of outside agencies in achieving program goals such as the AIMS program office, PNT program office, AFFSA, AF/A3, and EN-EZ home office engineering.
    • Participate in technical discussions with multiple stakeholder groups (e.g. maintainers, pilots, command requirements reps.)
