  • Overview

    Provide technical expertise to maintain and certify Weather Systems, including Radar, Automation, Meteorological and other various associated equipment.  These tasks involve certifying assigned systems and sub-systems to ensure compliance with USAF and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) established standards and safety requirements.  This position supports the Air Force Weather Branch within the Digital Directorate at Hanscom AFB, MA.


    • MA/MS and 5 years experience
    • Per DoD 8570, must have a current Security+ certification.  CISSP certification is desirable.
    • Knowledge of LINUX and Windows server and Windows desktop operating systems required.
    • Has skill and knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles and practices in systems such as WSR-88D, AN/TMS-2 Portable Doppler Radar, AN/FMQ-19/22/23, and AN/TMQ-53 Weather Systems.
    • Possess the knowledge and experience to perform the duties listed above.
    • Must be able to perform the following physical requirements: long periods of standing; walking over rough uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing or similar activities; recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds; and/or regular visits to outdoor sites.  Outdoor work sometimes performed in inclement weather.
    • Candidate must obtain, and maintain, the proper personnel clearance for this position.

    Additional Information:

    Travel of up to 1 week per month may be required.





    The Weather Systems Engineer SME duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Perform Installation, modification, test, repairs, overhauls, calibration maintenance evaluation and performance certification of complex integrated and interfacing electronic systems.
    • Ensure systems are operating at peak efficiency by performing optimization, analysis, periodic testing and corrective procedures.
    • Perform formalized inspections of facilities and equipment.
    • Ensure inspection and joint acceptance of newly installed equipment and/or major modifications to the system as required.
    • Participate in the installation, modification, and final testing of newly installed Weather Systems.
    • Develop and recommend changes in procedures and technical instructions to ensure more efficient operations and/or reduction in maintenance time.
    • Maintain inspection and certification records that are required by technical orders, applicable regulations, and operating instructions.
    • Annotate modifications on historical reports and records
    • Document maintenance using computerized and manual methods.
    • Analyze equipment historical documents and maintenance records for trends to improve the performance of assigned systems.
    • Use sophisticated stand-alone test equipment and built-in-test-equipment (BITE) to investigate, test, calibrate, analyze, isolate, and correct malfunctions in integrated systems and subsystems.
    • Perform installation of modifications as directed.
    • Repair or replace components; tunes, adjusts and aligns equipment.
    • Perform component level repairs as required which may involve designing and building testing products and research for replacement or improvement of components and circuit design
    • Develops and institutes changes in procedures to expedite corrective action and ensure continuous operation where required
    • Perform corrective maintenance by diagnosing, isolating, and repairing complex system(s)/subsystem(s) malfunctions to restore services with a minimum delay.
    • Submit technical order improvements, modification proposals, and deficiency reports as needed
    • Perform system administration actions to include imaging, patching, STIG checklists, support system scanning, network integration, and troubleshooting.
    • Determine when equipment malfunctions warrant shutdown of various systems. Acts as expert technical consultant to determine whether systems are operationally acceptable and safe within prescribed standards and tolerances for air traffic control and air navigation.
    • Perform system diagnosis which includes:
      • Determining cause of equipment degradation and malfunctions through application of electronic theory, system analysis, use of test equipment, schematics, wiring diagrams, and mathematical analysis
      • Troubleshooting equipment to localize, isolate, and accomplish necessary repairs
      • Determining when equipment malfunctions warrant shutdown of various systems
      • Verifying and certification of systems or subsystems are providing, within published parameters, the required services to the uses (air traffic control personnel, military and civilian weather forecasting agencies) at any given tim
